One of the best!
I was planning on doing the 69 mile route but I changed my mind just prior to the ride. I didn’t ride at all the week prior and knowing that this was on of the most challenging rides in the area, I decided to do the 42 mile route.
The ride started promptly at 7:30 and there was a great turnout. I managed to meet up with Eric (Tour de Paris) just prior to the start and got to ride with him for the first few miles. The routes then spilt and I was on my own. The roads were in excellent shape and lightly traveled. The rest stops were the best I’ve seen all year and the locals were just great! The community really gets behind this ride.
The route was indeed very challenging. The route travels from Cleburne HS, past Cleburne State Park, towards Glen Rose and back...... some incredibly beautiful terrain!
There were two killer climbs on the 42 mile route and the rest was small to large rollers. After the first 3 miles, there's not a flat stretch road on the route.
I finished in 2 hours and 39 minutes with an average of 16.3 mph. I really wish I had done the 69 mile route. At the end I felt like I still had at least another 15 to 20 miles in me and would have had no problem completing the longer route.
Oh, well! I'll just have to do it next year!
It was one of the most enjoyable rides I had been on all year.
